Caño Cristales the River of the 7 Colors

Caño Cristales the River of the 7 Colors

Colombia's biodiversity can equivalent to 20% of the planet's total!

Caño Cristales is one of those destinations that you don’t want to miss, it is an amazing marvel of nature. It is within the 673,000 Hectares of the National Natural Park located in La Macarena, a small town from Meta Department located around 270kms to the east of Bogotá, the capital of the country, going to Los Llanos (The Planes).

Caño Cristales is a small river coming down La Macarena Sierra which is part of a very unique region. Its rock Quartzite is part of the Guyanan Shield, one of the most ancient geological formations in the world and more than 1.2 billion years old, this small and isolated chain of mountains emerges alongside the Andes and into the Colombian Llanos just at the border of Amazonian Jungle; demarking its importance between the three different ecosystems.

Is famous for the Macarena Clavigera, a unique aquatic plant which lives in this river that spans 100kms, and changes its color into red only once a year between July and November, and then turns into green again, as if it was starting to hibernate until the next year.

To visit to Caño Cristales you might want to travel between the 1 June and the 1 of December when the entire river looks to turn into a rainbow. Out of this season the place is closed for visitors.
